Pushed aside of the figures much higher than you Counting wrong all the figures that mightn't be true Just ahead of the stragglers that you couldn't be But it is as it had to be I heard the softest murder in the carriage next door, oh The thought of it takes me far away One more, one less, what's it matter if you're focusing forward? There's just no time for keeping strays When I'm old and I'm aching and I'm wasting away When my place has been taken by the young and the brave So there's nobody watching and nobody to save The tides have turned and now I'm in the way I heard the softest murder in the carriage next door, oh The thought of it takes me far away One more, one less, what's the matter if you're focusing forward? There's just no time for keeping strays

Rooks 04:34
Rollercoaster, stoking fire While we broke into desire Keep me at your knees while you talk Only ghosts can host a liar Smile and focus their empire Keep me feeling pleased and I'll walk They got the country's lungs Held beneath a rubber gun They got the TV turned right up high They got their suits, boots and tails Nails hammering, hope impales your mind They come alive when we all go to sleep And they let their guard down to smile like a father We're the ones who started the war What are they fighting for? Unlimited fingerpower, blinking till the final hour Keep me underneath your thumb Been thinking, but thinking's sour Thinking ain't gonna shake the tower Keep me with a bottle of rum They got the state indoors Pipes beneath the wooden floors They got the music turned right up to ten They got their rooks looking ill Took time until they took the end They come alive when we all go to sleep And they let their guard down to smile like a father We're the ones who started the war What are they fighting for? (Rooks) They come alive when we all go to sleep And let their guard down to smile like a father They got the country's lungs held beneath a rubber gun They got the tv turned right up high They got their suits, boots and tails Nails hammering hope impales your mind They let their guard down to smile like a father We're the ones who started the war, the war What are they fighting for?

Walkabout 03:54
We did nothing at all to help you We did nothing at all Staring, polite and kind, is only a measure if you mean it I regret nothing at all, I mean it I regret nothing at all But did I mean it, father, was I mean to you? Did I mean it, father, was I mean to you? All of my friends have gone walkabout They got together then they broke apart All of my friends, I think that they've walked out And I've talked myself out of calling after them At first light stumble and fall, at first light The next step a gambler's house for one The moment you blink your eyes and all of a sudden You're alone, shiver in the night and nobody answers their phone It's a bitter realisation That the best you can do is sit and stare And you can read that the best is yet to come But if time keeps this still it'll never reach me Never reach me here And all of my friends have gone walkabout They got together then they broke apart All of my friends, I think that they've walked out And I've talked myself out of calling after them Of calling after them All of my friends have gone walkabout They got together then they broke apart All of my friends, I think that they've walked out And I've talked myself out of calling after them

George 04:26
George you know I'm standing here It's cold and there's a shadow by your windowpane I can't believe it's been a year since you got up to leave George these months pass like stone Glaciers only frozen by your icy words in those last weeks I'm trying to fix the puzzle piece How you slipped away seemed to slip my gaze There was music in the sound of my name Something 'bout the wind tonight Is coarse enough to shiver me to dust I must be crazy now to think that we could work it out And I'm only mad in love George there must be something you know of That can relieve me of this shame George won't you please let me in I'm knocking loud enough to break this door in on her chest It must be killing her to know your best George you said you needed time I've counted days till you'd be ready to start again Our story was to find a happy end How I missed the signs I kept a vulture's gaze upon your feet You just slipped away The music faded out from me Something 'bout the wind tonight Is coarse enough to shiver me to dust I must be crazy now to think that we could work it out And I'm only mad in love George there must be something you know of That can relieve me of this shame George I'm not quite here tonight The gin ran out and I'm just so alone You promised you'd always be waiting by the phone George I'm oh so cold out here Your car is pulling in and I'm ashamed At least when you arrive You'll hold my body close

Come Around 03:38
And I talk a lot of shit about the kind of guy I could be And all the things I would do if the world just got out of my way But whenever an endeavour rears its head I’d rather hop back into bed in sunny weather And sleep my life away And never has the dirt Tasted quite as sweet as the next time I eat the ground Getting better’s overrated Why come to work when I can come around? I don’t know dear Where to go and what direction But I’ll walk it straight until I hit a wall No one knows dear Where the dead go when they leave us But I sure know where I’d like to go before Reckon I could come around to yours? And I think I cracked the code scratching coins on my TV That hungover-phoneless-anecdotes are better starts to the day And I guess that life takes some persuasion but we’ve all got the time I’d rather be broke, blind and borderline than suit and tied up on an 8am train, “Can’t complain”, it’s the same-pain-same-gain-same-day Some days come and go Some days are shit, and I wrote this bit on the days that weren’t so bad I’d call in sick to life if I could Why earn a wage when I earned nothing else I ever had? I don’t know dear Where to go and what direction But I’ll walk it straight until I hit a wall No one knows dear Where the dead go when they leave us But I sure know where I’d like to go before Reckon I could come around to yours? And I’ve had it up to here Drinking rational beers To drown irrational fears And I’ve wasted so much time Wasted so much wine And I’m done trying again No one knows dear Where the dead go when they leave us But I sure know where I’d like to go before Reckon I could come around to yours?

about

The Softest Murder is the sound of Parkville becoming the folk-pop powerhouses they never expected to be.

With the addition of drummer Paul Whitwood to the live lineup in 2018, the gentle, unassuming folk that guitarist Liam Bell, pianist Michael D'Emilio and violinist Dylan Knur were making was suddenly transformed into something driving and confident, and the band knew they had to get into the studio to capture the new sound.

No one was better equipped for the job of helping Parkville perfect their new sound than producer Sean Kenihan of Northeast Party House. Bringing his deep understanding of capturing energy in the studio, and a flair for centrepiece moments, Kenihan gave the band the push they needed to let go of genre boundary and create something truly unique.
